You may be tired of hearing that "It's time to change the conversation." That sentence has been used quite a bit by many recently. And misused more often than not. The fact is that we DO need to change the conversation, and we want to make certain you have the resources you need to change it in the right direction.
These days, many conversations take place on social media. If we truly want to achieve Breast Cancer Deadline 2020®, we need to generate more support and enthusiasm across the country for the deadline. Social media is an important tool in that activism.
If you are not comfortable on social media, don’t worry. We have plenty of avenues for you to learn more. Alan Rosenblatt of Turner4D held several informative social media webinars for NBCC advocates. You can access the recordings for both the Twitter Webinar and the Social Media Advocacy Webinar. These webinars are packed with information—don’t hesitate to listen to them several times. Please also join us for a Social Media Open Forum Webinar on Wednesday, July 9 from 12:00pm-1:00pm EST. Come prepared with questions!
There are several other online resources available to you. We relaunched our Online Center for NBCC Advocacy Training last month. Watch a few courses, and make sure to share them with your friends. You can change the conversation with our breast cancer facts and figures infographic, which is available in video and PDF form. Don’t forget to check our Congressional Scorecard to see if your representative supports the Accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act. Now is the time to secure their support.

You may have noticed that tomosynthesis, also known as 3-D mammography, has been in the news recently. As with all screening tools and therapies, NBCC’s main concern is that new techniques do more than detect cancers—we want devices that actually save the lives of the women and men we love. While many headlines claimed that 3-D mammography is the new “breakthrough” in breast cancer, NBCC's Fran Visco warned against overreaction in a USA Today article titled, “3-D mammograms find more cancers, but do they save lives?”
The article reads:
The absolute differences between the two types of exams, in terms of the number of cancers found, is very small, says Fran Visco, president of the National Breast Cancer Coalition. And other benefits are uncertain…. A screening that finds more breast cancers only helps women if the test also reduces their risk of dying, Visco says.

Fran also wrote a piece in the Huffington Post this month about the importance of moving beyond breast cancer awareness to save lives. She argues that while there was a significant need for awareness when breast cancer was taboo, it is now time to focus our efforts and fund research that will prevent women and men from getting breast cancer and prevent metastasis, to save lives. NBCC’s Artemis Projects® are an example of that kind of disruptive research.
