Call to Action January 2018

Thank you from NBCC

As 2017 was coming to a close, we called upon you to help us match a $100,000 gift from the Joyce Goldman Matching Fund, thanks to the generosity of the Joyce and Irving Goldman Family Foundation.  Your generosity was overwhelming.  During a year that was marked by significant ups and downs for many of us, your continued support of NBCC was unwavering and particularly meaningful. And we are grateful.

Whether you attended the Advocate Leadership Summit, lobbied by our side on Capitol Hill, completed the breast cancer questionnaire on DNA.Land, urged your local representatives to support the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program or the Affordable Care Act, or simply shared your belief in our mission on social media, you've been an important part of advancing our work. Thanks to you, we've made progress on all fronts towards
Breast Cancer Deadline 2020®.

Thank you for continuing to partner with us. We look forward to all that we will accomplish together in 2018.

2018 Advocate Leadership Summit & Lobby Day

Learn. Network. Raise your voice. Have fun, and make a difference. Now more than ever, it is critical that we use every available resource in the fight to end breast cancer. We must stand together to demand more from our leaders and policymakers. And we must secure a seat at all tables where decisions about research, health care, and policies are made.

At this year’s Summit, you will have the opportunity to build the skills and the networks you’ll need to affect change in your community and nationally. You will participate in thought-provoking workshops and plenaries where you will learn about developments in breast cancer research from leading experts in the field. You will receive training on how to be the most effective advocate you can be, by learning how to participate effectively in scientific peer reviews, how to improve your critical appraisal skills. and affect public policy. You will have the opportunity to meet fellow advocates from around the country and form lasting collaborations. The training you receive at Summit will continue to support you as we work together towards our goal of knowing how to end breast cancer by January 1, 2020.

The NBCC 2018 Advocate Leadership Summit will be held April 28th – April 30th at the Renaissance Capital View Hotel in Arlington, VA. Lobby Day on Capitol Hill is May 1st. Registration and room costs have been reduced this year! Bring a friend and save more. Learn how you can be a Deadline Champion and fundraise to cover your registration. The 2017 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium

On December 5th, 85 Project LEAD® graduates gathered ahead of the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium for NBCC’s annual Project LEAD® Advanced Topics Session. These advocates heard presentations from leading scientists on the ongoing research into breast cancer metastasis. Dr. Alana Welm of the Huntsman Cancer Institute presented on the Models of Breast Cancer Metastasis, and Dr. Cyrus Ghajar of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center discussed Dissemination, Early Seeding and Metastasis. Advanced Project LEAD advocates Nancy Ryan and Tracy Leduc provided their insights from a patient advocate perspective. Attendees also heard from Advanced LEAD graduate, Debbie Laxague, about the dynamic breast cancer vaccine landscape. Each presentation was followed by a lively question and answer session, during which advocates were able to discuss the details of the science with the researchers themselves. The program was co-sponsored by the Alamo Breast Cancer Foundation.

NBCC Webinar: The Immune System and Tumor Dormancy: Can we prevent lethal disease?

On November 30th, NBCC hosted a webinar for President's Council members that examined targeting dormant tumor cells to prevent metastasis.

The webinar was conducted by Cyrus Ghajar, PhD, who directs the Laboratory for the Study of Metastatic Microenvironments (LSM2) in Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center’s Translational Research Program.

A vital component of NBCC's mission is our work to make certain researchers are answering meaningful questions that will save lives.  We do this in part through our Artemis Project®, through research-driven and comprehensive webinars, through our science advocacy, and through our programs that train the public in the language and concepts of science.

NBCC Updates

Please join us in extending gratitude and best wishes to NBCC’s National Field Director, Sharon Ford Watkins, who retired at the end of 2017. Sharon was a devoted and fierce breast cancer advocate and staff member for more than 25 years, directing NBCC’s nationwide grassroots public policy and mobilization implementation efforts. Sharon was one of our two initial staff members and we will miss her!

We are tremendously appreciative of Sharon’s contributions to NBCC, most notably her tireless and resolute devotion to our advocates. Her commitment to propelling NBCC forward in our mission to know how to end breast cancer by January 1, 2020 was incomparable.

NBCC is also excited to welcome two new member organizations to the Board of Directors for 2018: the American Association of Breast Care Professionals and the Breast Cancer Care and Research Fund. We look forward to working with these two new organizations, and our returning organizations, during a productive 2018!
