Getting Linked Into Social Media

Using Social Media to Change the Conversation

Social media is the use of web-based and mobile technologies to turn communication into interactive dialogue. Social media has been defined as "a group of Internet-based applications that …allow the creation and exchange of user-generated content."

Mashable, a news source for social and digital media, published an article, “10 Ways to Change the World through Social Media.” Here are a few of their suggestions with our own spin:

Take social actions

“People are volunteering, donating, signing petitions, making loans and doing other social actions as we speak—all over the world.” We can too. Using social media, we can change the conversation about breast cancer starting today.

Twitter with a purpose

Celebrity Tweep Ashton Kutcher tweeted to millions of his followers about a cause important to him with tremendous success. You don’t have to be a movie star to tweet with purpose. Tweet about how you will advance Breast Cancer Deadline 2020® and invite others to join you in the movement.  The more you tweet about ending breast cancer by January 1, 2020, the more we will engage the kind of conversations that will help us achieve our deadline.

Visit the White House

The White House and your elected officials are social. Find them on Facebook, Twitter or MySpace. Ask them to support the Accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act and tell them why this legislation is important to you. Be sure to remind them you vote.

Join a Cause on Facebook

Facebook is a powerful platform for change and community action. Apps like Causes have united users around important issues and rallied them to action. NBCC’s causes on Facebook are Stop Breast Cancer and Women with Balls: STRIKE! Breast Cancer. Join them today and invite your friends, family, neighbors, colleagues and others in your community to join.

Unite the world through video

Many of us have seen—and shared—videos on YouTube that make you smile, move you to action and touch your heart. NBCC has a host of videos supporting Breast Cancer Deadline 2020®—some are yours! Send us your video about why you are changing the conversation or how, and we’ll post it on our YouTube channel at YouTube.com/BreastCancerDeadline.
