Truth #7

Most people think they have a
higher risk of breast cancer
than they actually do.

Overall, a women's lifetime risk of developing cancer is about 1 in 8. That means that if a group of 100 women live until the age of 90, about 12 may develop breast cancer in their lifetime. However, according to some surveys and studies, many women mistakenly believe that they have a 1 in 8 risk every year. Others mistakenly interpret the statistic to mean that 1 in 8 women have had a diagnosis of breast cancer. If you live to be 90 years old, you have a 1 in 8 or 12.5% chance of being diagnosed with breast cancer at some point during your life.
