National Breast Cancer Coalition

September 2018 Grassroots Action Items

One of NBCC’s highest legislative priorities this year is to enact legislation to waive the 24 month waiting period for Medicare eligibility and the 5 month waiting period for Social Security Disability Insurance benefits for individuals with Metastatic Breast Cancer.

On Thursday, June 14, Representatives Peter King (R-NY) and Kathy Castor (D-FL) introduced H.R. 6114, the Metastatic Breast Cancer Access to Care Act

Thanks to NBCC's outstanding advocates, the bill currently has 57 cosponsors.

We have set a goal to have 100 co-sponsors by September 30.

The following are actions you can take to help us reach this important goal:

ACTIVITIES FOR REPRESENTATIVES WHO ARE CURRENTLY NOT COSPONSORS OF H.R. 6114

  • Send an op-ed piece or letter to the editor of your local newspaper
  • Send an email or call the health care policy staff person in your Representative’s DC office and ask them to review the bill and recommend cosponsorship
  • Remind your Representative and/or their staff person that October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Let them know NBCC plans to publicize, locally and nationally, the Representatives who have supported H.R. 6114.
  • Use social media to ask your Representative to cosponsor H.R. 6114 (this can be combined with a thank you for members of Congress in the same delegation who have already signed on to the bill).

Please have your Representatives contact Deena Tauster in Representative King’s office at deena.tauster@mail.house.gov or (202) 225-7896 to cosponsor this legislation. Also, please let NBCC know if your Representative has agreed to sign on so we can keep a running record as well.

ACTIVITIES FOR REPRESENTATIVES WHO ARE CURRENTLY COSPONSORS OF H.R. 6114

  • Submit a letter to the editor of the local newspaper and/or post on social media thanking the Representative for cosponsoring H.R. 6114 and reiterate why it is important for individuals with metastatic breast cancer.
  • Reach out to the Representative’s district office and offer to provide an article or background information for the Representative’s newsletter, website or materials for events during October being held in commemoration of Breast Cancer Awareness month. NBCC will provide sample press articles/statements for local news outlets for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. You can ask your Representative for a quote to be included in this statement.
  • Ask for a commitment that the Representative will work to get the bill enacted.
  • Invite the Representative to attend/speak at any local events being held in October.
  • Offer to work with the Representative’s staff on a press event/roundtable discussion or other event during the month of October to highlight her/his support for the bill and his/her engagement on breast cancer issues. This can be publicized locally and thorugh social media.

If you have any questions or would like to let us know that your Representative has agreed to co-sponsor, please contact Jennifer Berzok at jkberzok@breastcancerdeadline2020.org.
