Building Leaders at the Inaugural Advocate Leadership Summit - Join Us!

In 2013, our Breast Cancer Deadline 2020^® efforts are focused on building leadership at all levels. To strengthen our grassroots leadership across the country, we will convene a completely unique summit of leaders this year. Join us at the Inaugural Advocate Leadership Summit in Washington DC, May 4-6, 2013. This meeting will provide attendees with life-long leadership skills and just-in-time strategies as well as Big Ideas and advanced learning. Leaders also will experience small group interactions with researchers and thought leaders.

Attendance will be capped at 250. Registration for the Summit is open to all advocates who commit to playing a leadership role and raising $1,000 or more in support of the research and mobilization work of Breast Cancer Deadline 2020^®. There are no additional registration fees for the summit, and the fund raising contribution entitles the participant to three nights of shared lodging at the Summit hotel.

A deadline changes everything.

Each Advocate who attends will be taking the next big leap forward by becoming committed as an NBCC Breast Cancer Deadline 2020^® leader! The deadline truly does change everything. It must for us to succeed.

We need advocates to help to grow our base of support to include everyone who cares about ending breast cancer. By getting more and more members of your community behind our effort through your leadership and fundraising efforts, we will be able to continue our work on the Artemis Projects^® to develop a breast cancer vaccine and other research collaborations on the causes and prevention of metastasis, and our unparalleled advocate education and training programs.

The first step is to visit BreastCancerDeadline2020.org/2013Summit and create a personal fundraising page TODAY. Creating a personal page is your way of registering. Register now and we can reserve your place at the Inaugural Advocate Leadership Summit; you must commit to attending by March 31, 2013 but may continue working toward your fundraising goal through May 4, 2013.

We have prepared all of the technical and creative support you need, including sample email letters to solicit support, template language for your webpage, and simple ways to add photos. Whether you solicit contributions from your network, have your organization donate the cost, or contribute on your own, to register you must create your web page today.

For decades, mice have been the animal model of choice in the study of human diseases. But questions have been raised about how well mouse model study results translate to human biology. Most recently, these questions have been raised in the areas of sepsis, burns and trauma. You will use assignments provided to you in February/March to form virtual teams and formulate questions for researchers on important topics for Breast Cancer Deadline 2020^® (inflammation, biomarkers, clinical trial design, etc.).
12:45 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.	Lunch and Roundtable Strategy Discussions Working at your lunchtime tables grouped by region, you will begin to work with other advocates on strategies to mobilize your community groups in preparation for the strategy workshops after lunch.
7:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.	Inaugural Advocate Leadership Summit Closing Reception Come ready to party and dance it up with old and new friends. Music, cocktails and dessert provide a fantastic setting to relax, enjoy and prepare for the following day on Capitol Hill.

Lobby Day

NBCC’s Annual Lobby Day on Capitol Hill will immediately follow the Inaugural Advocate Leadership Summit on Tuesday, May 7. Whether you’ve attended the Inaugural Advocate Leadership Summit or not, all are welcome and encouraged to join this immensely empowering day. We expect busloads of advocates arrive on Capitol Hill prepared and ready to discuss NBCC’s top priorities and urge their representatives to support government actions that will move public policy toward our goal of ending breast cancer.

Lobby Day is open to all who want to participate in this powerful day when hundreds of breast cancer activists make their voices heard. On Lobby Day, our breast cancer advocates will:

Urge members of Congress to support and pass the Accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act, legislation which will help meet the Breast Cancer Deadline 2020^® goal;
Promote continued funding for the Department of Defense (DOD) Breast Cancer Research Progra.m. (BCRP);
Support access to quality health care for all.

Advocates interested in joining NBCC for Lobby Day who are not attending the May 4-6 Inaugural Advocate Leadership Summit are welcome to travel to Washington, DC, to participate. Arlington, VA and Washington, DC

The 2013 Inaugural Advocate Leadership Summit will be held at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City in Arlington, VA. Just minutes from Reagan National Airport and downtown Washington, DC, the Hyatt Regency and surrounding area will offer many things to make your visit enjoyable!

Getting Around Town:
The Hyatt is located in Arlington, VA. Many attractions and restaurants are within walking distance of the hotel. Please visit the hotel concierge desk located in the Hyatt lobby to receive directions and walking maps of Arlington and surrounding areas.

Public transportation is offered through the Washington Metro Transit Authority via public bus and Metro service. The closest Metro stop to the Hyatt is the Crystal City stop on the Yellow and Blue lines, which is approximately six blocks away. If you do not want to walk, Hyatt offers a complimentary shuttle to and from this Metro stop. Shuttles leave from the Hyatt every 30 minutes. Full Metro and public bus schedules and map information can be viewed on the WMATA website.

Taxis are available at the hotel 24 hours a day. All taxi cabs now follow the metered system for fare explanation and payment.
